Unlock Your Potential: Transform Your Thoughts, Transform Your Practice

Apr 23, 2025

Did you know that the average person has between 60,000 and 70,000 thoughts a day? What's more, research indicates that a staggering 80% of these thoughts are negative, and a remarkable 95% are repetitive. This means that many of us, including you, are unconsciously reinforcing patterns that don’t serve us, in life or practice.

Why Do We Tend to Think Negatively?

Our brains have evolved to prioritize negative thoughts as a survival mechanism. This negativity bias kept our ancestors alert to potential dangers. However, in today’s world, this can lead to unnecessary stress, anxiety, and self-doubt, especially as we strive to grow our practices and serve our people effectively.

Take Control of Your Thoughts for Greater Success

While we can’t stop thoughts from popping up, we can control how we respond to them. Here are some powerful strategies to help you cultivate a mindset that fosters success, peace, and happiness to improve your life and practice:

1. Mindfulness & Awareness Practice Mindfulness Meditation:
This allows you to observe your thoughts without judgment, reducing their emotional weight. Take a few minutes each day to sit in silence and simply notice your thoughts, letting them flow in and out without indulging in them.

Use the Power of the Pause Before Reacting:  When a negative thought arises, take a moment to recognize it. Instead of reacting automatically, ask yourself if this thought is serving your body, mind, spirit, or goals. Remember, your subconscious is always listening and can be trained to support your positive thinking.

2. Cognitive Reframing Challenge Negative Thoughts:
When a limiting belief surfaces, it's time to take action. Question its validity. Ask yourself, “Is this thought true? What evidence do I have for or against it? These are powerful questions that will be a valuable resource when you establish a pattern of using them to combat your negative thoughts. It's time to take back control of your thoughts and beliefs. Replace Limiting Beliefs with Empowering Affirmations: Instead of saying, “I can’t handle more patients,” shift to “I will find a way, I am capable and resilient.” I don't know what to do, with "I can figure this out.”

3. Gratitude & Positive Focus Keep a Gratitude Journal:
Write down three NEW things you are grateful for each day. This simple practice can help rewire your brain for positivity and maintain your focus on what truly matters.

Surround Yourself with Positivity: Engage with uplifting books, podcasts, and individuals who inspire a growth mindset. Positivity is contagious!

4. Reduce Mental Clutter Use Time Blocking and Engage in Focused Work:
Block time for your most important activities.  As an example in practice, we have service, administrative, marketing, practice development, and skill development times which require different focus, and time. Focus on one task at a time instead of multitasking. Being focused not only improves your efficiency but also keeps your mind clear and focused.

Take Mental Breaks: Incorporate short breaks into your day—go for a walk, spend time in nature, or practice breathwork. These moments can reset your thought patterns. Never allow your team to work through lunch or eat at their desk because you want them to function at their best.

5. Practice Visualization and Use Mental Imagery
Just like athletes visualize their success, you can too! Picture yourself achieving your goals—whether it’s visualizing the perfect day, growing your practice, connecting with patients, or creating a positive impact in your community.

Align Your Actions with Positive Outcomes: Visualizing success primes your brain to act in accordance with those positive experiences.

Remember, most of our thoughts are automatic and habitual. The key to greater peace, joy, and success lies in awareness and intentional redirection. By consciously choosing empowering thoughts, you can reshape your reality, making positivity and success your new default state.
