Creating a Summer to Remember: An Intentional Successful Practice Owner's Guide
Jun 03, 2026Every year around this time, something shifts.
Schedules loosen. Kids come home. The calendar fills with cookouts, road trips, and long evenings outside. And for many chiropractors, the practice calendar starts to thin out too.
Summer can be a season of extraordinary joy and momentum, or it can be six weeks that quietly drift by without a decision ever being made. The difference usually comes down to one thing: intention.
Before this season gets away from you, I want to invite you to pause and ask yourself a question that sounds simple but rarely is: What do I actually want from this summer?
There Is No Wrong Answer Here
Some of you will use this season as a launchpad. You will lean in, grow your patient base, build the momentum that carries you into fall with energy and results. That is a valid and powerful choice.
Others will intentionally pull back. You will shorten your hours, take a real vacation, spend time at the pool with your grandkids, and let the practice settle into its rhythm without you driving every detail. That is equally valid and equally strategic.
What is not strategic is drifting through summer without deciding what it is for.
Three Questions Worth Sitting With
Before June gets its footing, I encourage you to carve out fifteen quiet minutes and work through these:
What matters most to me right now? Not what should matter, not the answer you think a high-performing practice owner is supposed to give. What actually matters when you are being honest with yourself? Growth? Rest? Presence? Connection? There is no wrong answer, but there is an unexamined one, and that is where drift begins.
What do I intend to accomplish this summer, and why? Intention without a reason behind it fades fast. Know your why. Whether the goal is fifteen new patients a month or a four-day workweek with Fridays at the lake, the reason is what holds when motivation dips in mid-July.
What would I regret not doing, being, or having by Labor Day? This is the clarifying question. Regret is a clean mirror. Look ahead to September and imagine yourself looking back. What would sting? Let that guide your choices now, while there is still time to build something worth remembering.
Do Not Leave Your Practice Members Out of This Conversation
Whatever season you choose to create for yourself, do not let your practice members drift through summer without your support.
Summer is one of the biggest seasons of routine disruption that chiropractic practices face. Travel, kids home from school, irregular sleep, hours in the car, waterpark weekends, late-night backyard gatherings. The nervous system does not get a holiday just because the school calendar does.
Subluxations do not take vacations.
This is your opportunity to lead as a voice of wisdom rather than a source of pressure. Remind your community that summer is simply better when the nervous system is functioning well. That staying on a recommended care plan is an investment in being present for the season, not a chore that competes with it.
Simple Strategies to Implement Now
- Reach out personally to patients who are overdue. Not with a generic recall notice. A real, warm, human message that says you noticed they have been away and you would love to see them.
- Connect your messaging to what your patients are actually doing: hiking, gardening, traveling, playing with their grandchildren. Meet them in the context of their lives, not the context of your schedule.
- If you choose to offer alternative appointment times, such as early mornings or a Saturday slot, make sure it is a choice that also serves you. There is no version of excellent patient care that requires you to sacrifice the season entirely for yourself.
- Train your team to hold the same philosophy. Every conversation is a chance to partner with your practice members, not to chase them. This is about the quality of their life..
A Final Thought
Summer is not the enemy of a thriving practice. Lack of intention is.
Decide now what this season is for. Hold it with clarity. Show up for your people the way you would want someone to show up for you.
September will arrive on schedule, as it always does. Let it find you without regret, with a summer worth talking about for years to come.
